The Tully Elementary After-School Program
What did I do?
For my service-learning, I was offered a volunteer tutor/mentor position with the Tully Elementary School's After-School Program. This program combines lessons on literacy with lessons on science and mathematics, which are increasingly important components of children's education.
I worked alongside the program's coordinator, Mary Podsiedlik, who really helped with my personal growth. I enjoyed being helpful with her younger students. I worked with groups of 5th and 6th graders to facilitate their challenge activities. The programming is student interest focused and the students are engaged in age appropriate learning challenges every week. The biggest challenge for me was to not help the students problem solve. I could not intercede in the process. The groups needed to work out the challenges on their own. I firmly believe that children can learn as much from failure as success. The activities were designed to help them seek out challenge and understand the value to their understanding when things don't quite work the way they think they should. It was a really fun experience for me!
I really loved spending my time in a classroom full of eager learners. I felt comfortable and confident in my role as a tutor/mentor. I am so happy I met everyone and was a part of a great spring of learning fun and adventure. My service-learning experience helped me grow personally and academically.
